Media Inventory of a typical day in my life and response to the last lecture

As soon as I wake up I start my computer and I put the music on. Sometimes it is a music from my harddrive that I got from a friend when we exchange stuff like videos movies and music or from downloading and sometimes I go on youtube to listen to tracks that i don't have on my harddrive. After that I take a shower and a breakfast. Then I sign in facebook to check my messages and communicate with my family and friends. I often go shopping in the morning. Aroud midday I go to uni while listening to the radio. I sometimes have lunch at uni so I have a look at the uni bar's menu and the cafeteria's menu to make my choice. I attend lectures and tutorials where we follow the teacher's explanation on the screen. We often use computer, specific software and the internet during tutorials. At the end of the day I give a call to my girfriend and get home for dinner. I always turn the TV on while having dinner to be up to date on everyday news.
As soon as I wake up I am already using communication technology and using media as everyday typical schedule. Media are becoming part of our life that we don't even notice they are. as we said in the lectures media are invisible they overlap with the physical environment. Because of technology and media the way we live, even our language is changing. In fact the medium is changing the way the message is conveyed. Thinking about media in the way that it could damage our culture and society in an ethical perspective make me think that technology is taking over our culture and media shape the way we think and the way we behave as a whole. Nowadays even shaping the way the society is working. Are technologies and media shaping the way the society work or simply mrrors it? This is another point that we can think of and according to me Media and technologies shape and mirrors the society beliefs values and public opinion.

I had a look on Jason Nelson website which is creative. I have never experienced this kind of website before. His poetry is really strange and this is in fact unique to the internet. This is intenet art where the mediatisation make it art as we can add a lot of things around that are going to attract the eye. The internet is now transforming or creating a new kind of poetry that is only poetry if watched from the internet.
In the second part of the lecture we watched a video on this new virtual community called "second life". This is a cyberspace where people have their own avatar to represent them selves in that place. They can personalize and dress their avatar but they can also put real money in that cyberspace to afford clothes or land. The most surprising thing is that you can convert real money into second life currency and it works the other way. This made me think of issues like people are buying land and selling them to make profit but it is ony about virtual stuff nothing of what you buy in second life is real. The only real thing and here is the point of second life is that you invest that money in a community where people can share communicate and even do business so this what they are looking for when they sign up they want to be part of that community even if it has a cost. Moreover if you are smart enough you could make profit. technology enable peole that have the knowledge to create completly virtual space where you can do the same things as in real life and sometimes more.

Today lecture was difficult to me as I said i am an international students and I stuggle with politics and the australian federal system. However we talked about democracy which is a term that i know and we also introduce the term citizen-hacker which is surprising as they were not considered as computers criminals in the past. Furthermore we talked about anonymity on the internet which in fact does not exixts. This has led us to the censorship side of the internet with the black list issues. One thing that we can think of is how could we make this process of black list more transparent? It is trues that filtering the internet is important to protect our children from bad website.But if censorship of content is introduced in any website that the government think innapropriate are they not limiting aour rights to view ontent that we could view through anoher media. It is not only content that are censor but also our rights. What if any content from an opposing political party was deemed innapropriate to view? what if certain religious websites were deemed innapropriate? Censoring people rights in regards to innapropriate website is not the solution; Supervising your child when he use internet is a good beginning.

As an international students i am not really following the australian politics and I don't know any member's name; and I am not really interesting in politics. However I know that the Australian government want to censor the internet and that the Australian system is a Democray. In a democracy the main idea is that people should be free to express what they think of a government in supporting or criticising it so that the government is aware of the public opinion and the internet is a great tool in terms of communicating messages. Even in campaigning, the representatives should freely reveal their view concerning the political environment through the internet.As adults we are mature and we are supposed to be intelligent enough to make choices concerning our political view and concerning what we want to support adhere or criticise in life therefore the most resourceful tool which is the internet should not be censored. Moreover, as Australia is democracy censorship goes against fredom of speech. On the other hand it is true that there are many things like child porn on the internet and this kind of website are really chocking for young eyes but here comes the parent's responsability to teach their child how to make a good use of the internet.


I have already signed an e-petition, nothing really formal in fact it was an email that I received from a friend and I added my name at the end to say that I was ok but I cannot figure out what it was about. However real petitioning enables the public to make formal request to the parliament. The Queensland Parliament introduced online petitioning in 2002 and these petitions submitted in electronic format are referred as e-petition and information about e-petitions is available on the Qld Parliament website www.parliament.qld.gov.au/petitions
But as an international student I could not sign one.

Narratology and Ludology are 2 approaches that I am going to write about today as we had a lecture on video game studies. As a brief sum up I define these 2 approaches: Narratology is the study of video games from the perspective of them being stories or literary work. Ludology is not concerned with the story elements of games but rather with the Game Play elements. I think that they should combine the two approaches as video game is a whole with a story element and a game play element. However looking at video games from another angle make people think of media and semiotic approach which is concerned with how the process of making meaning operates in particular games. Here is the point as video games are precursors of media considering the fact that console and gaming machine were the early computer where you could immerge yourself in a virtual world through this game or medium. Another aspect is that the game has to have a meaning and has to make the player feel that he is doing something in that virtual environment (game play elements), the game has to be logic and in a chronologic order of difficulty where the story is understandable and involving (Narratology). Today majority of video games have an option to play online with other friends or versus friend, they can also chat, exchange idea and games items, shop online and so on. These video games are making virtual community; and all academic approaches of study are important as they examine their own domain in terms of what the player expect and what impacts this could have on them. I have heard about addiction but is it a problem coming from the user or the designer…?

2. Mawson Station and South Pole are names of live webcam in Antarctica. There isn't any where to stay, eat, sleep or drink in Antarctica. What a pity, there's an opportunity here for someone to open the first ever Antarctic bed and Breakfast!
3. Systems such as international mail and telephony have played a huge role in bringing the world together. Nowadays the internet is enhancing the globalisation process as the internet is a whole world.
4. The cheapest form of travel from the Gold Coast to Melbourne is taking a flight with flight centre as they propose a 66 dollars flight if you take it enough in advance. And it is a direct flight. You could take a bus which is 10 dollars less expensive but it is not straight to Melbourne. The bus makes a couple of stop over and that’s not what you want.

There are two aspects of today material that I found interesting concerning the study of new communication technology. First we talked about the Creative Commons and copyrights. Creative commons is a kind of copyright but more a more flexible version of it as it enable people to share,remix or reuse legally the work of someone else. Creative Commons licenses provide simple, standardized alternatives to the "all rights reserved" of traditional copyright. This idea of more flexible copyrights comes from the free software movement. We still have the choice to use free software but nowadays a majority of people pay for their software. Therefore this idea of sharing knowledge and openness is marginalized as making money is at the head of today society. The real difference is in the concept: free software are available to anyone and you can access the source code so that you can make changes to it and share it with your new arrangement. This idea has created a connection between people and they exchange their software, ideas and knowledge in order to contribute to the community. On the other hand software that you have to buy to use are good but the source code is hidden so that no one can make changes or copy the software. This mean that if there is any thing that you want to arrange in the software, you are not allowed. You cannot change it and share it. You could probably send an email to the creator but he would certainly ask you to wait for the new version and pay for it.

In today lecture we examine the term privacy which nowadays raise some ethical issues considering the internet boom. First of all let's define privacy. According to me privacy refers to all the information about your self that you don't want to be known.
Let's have a look at facebook, one of the most common social network. We were told in the lecture that all facebook executives were involved in things like Data management and technology oriented field. This is wired as facebook function to me is to link up people together and enable them to share stuff. However it seems that facebook has complete other idea of it. In fact it is an advertising company that make money from selling their data to other conmay that may need it. But it is not propely written when you sign in and this is why most of the people don't know about this. This is not ethical as your virtual identity is not your real identity you can put up fake information about yourself and if revealed to people you did not want to now could create big problems in your real life. On the other hand you probably put on facebook real personal stuff and if available to any one you did non want to could ruin a life and the person you are. Finally one other thing that I think is ethically critical is the fact that in the beginning of 2010 facebook changed its privacy setting and for a couple of days every profiles were available to anyone this could have cause big problems in terms of ethical implications as people could try to hide things in real life that they probably reveal on their profiles. Inother words their profiles were nacked to the internet.
Think about what you put on facebook as it could affect your real life.

One aspect of today’s lecture that I found interesting was the connection between technology and media. As defined in the lecture,” technology is the study of mechanical arts and their application to the world” “When technology is used for social and cultural communication that technology becomes a medium of communication”. This raises the concept that the media are in fact media of communication. Moreover, there is another concept of importance which is Virtual community. Virtual community is a group of people who communicate via internet. Early internet studies also identified the term of Individual identity which refers to a way to explain how people express who they are via the internet. This means that anyone can represent his self as someone he is not in reality.
On the early internet people who were isolated used the internet to meet other people ad share common interest. With the internet boom of the 1990’s the focus has moved to networks where the individual is the common thread. Here comes the Web 2.0 which is a new way of using internet with features as Folksonomy which refers to organizing knowledge; user-generated content which is the idea that people create photo, images…and put it on the internet; and finally open API which means sharing openly between services on the internet. In fact collaboration a community is here the central element. Even normal people who are not expert could put on internet something to share. This new Web was called The Read-Write web as oppose to the previous version “read only”. This timeline of how the internet changed and how social networks were born are changing a little the way consider the web and those social networks. It’s only lecture 3, I am looking forward to see new things about these technologies that I use in my everyday life and that I don’t know much about.

tute 3 task 2 about BBS "old community"

BBS, a Bulletin Board system is an old system or so called place that enable computer users to share ideas, knowledge and more. In other words we can say that it is a cyberspace which is in fact a virtual environment. But in that period they were generally closed system which means that they were not connected to the internet. BBS was one of the first systems that associated with the idea of virtual community as people who were BBS users were sharing and communicating via this system. Like most forms of computer networking a BBS consists of a host computer which run software to operate BBS, the other users were connected to this host computer dialling in through a modem and the host computer serves them. We can say that BBS was precursors of the World Wide Web social network like twitter, my space… Through the way BBS is used people learned about this big phenomenon of being online.
The thing is that it was mainly a local phenomenon as you had to pay an extra for long distance communication. Early BBS users were accessed only over a phone line using a modem. When the web became more widespread, around 1993 BBS faded in popularity as new virtual community were created.

Today's lecture was interesting as we studied the history of cmputers and the internet which is something that we are born with but often not aware of its real development. The first thing I was wondering even before the lecture was "why history matters?"
Calculator which is the first computer was invented as an extension of human abilities in the goal of helping people to do complex calculation, the primary use of computers was for military purposes and business uses. In today's lecture we have seen as well that there was two way of thinking concerning computers and the internet: on one hand freedom and openness, which is putting up ideas for free and for anyone and on the other hand the business way of thinking which is concerned withpaying for it. By the end of the lecture I started to understand why history is of importance in New Communication Technologies. As an illustration of this last sentence and considering what we learned during the lecture we can say that the internet comes from a set of historical and cultural moments and that is why history matters.
